Organic Coffee Beans – Why All the Hype?
Why should you buy organic coffee beans when you can purchase coffee beans right from a local grocer? Many people start buying organic beans because they are not happy with the taste of the beans they can buy in stores. If you aren’t bothered by the quality of the coffee products in your local area, then there are three benefits to ordering organic coffee online that must be considered:
1. Non-organic coffee beans are actually quite unhealthy and potentially dangerous to your health.
The difference between an organic product and a non-organic product is the absence of chemically based pesticides, preservatives, and fertilizers. Many organic products will also avoid artificial sweeteners and flavorings, since they are added chemicals to food as well.
Chemical preservatives are used to give foods a longer shelf life while chemical fertilizers and pesticides are used because they are cheaper than other options. The problem is these synthetic products are chemicals that can damage the human body. Studies are starting to link these chemicals to cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Some have even been pulled from the shelves and made illegal for prepackaged foods, while others are limited as to how much can be used in a product.
Organic products are much healthier and less risky, since they are fresh grown without all of the chemicals sprayed over them.
2. You are helping preserve the planet when you buy organic.
When chemicals are sprayed over crops, they get into the dirt and become a danger to the environment as well. Some believe that peeling fruits and vegetables gets rid of the chemical spray, but this is untrue since much of the chemicals end up in the soil and then inside the flesh of our produce. From the soil, the chemicals make their way into the water supply and we end up bathing in it, cooking with it, and drinking it. These chemicals negatively affect the air, soil and water quality in many communities.
Soil used to grow crops should be rich in nutrients and organisms needed by the human body, but studies are showing it is deplete in many areas. The depletion of healthy soil nutrients is due to the land being overplanted and the amount of chemicals being sprayed into the ground. When you buy organic, you protect the earth and your own body from these pollutants.
3. Many organic coffee bean manufacturers do not roast the beans until they are ready to ship out, so they are far fresher than other beans.
Most people do not know what truly fresh coffee beans taste like until they order from a company offering fresh organic beans. You will be hard pressed to find genuinely fresh beans selling in local stores. If you did not realize that coffee beans could be stale, you are not alone. There is a common misconception that any bean purchased whole and ground up at home is fresh.
This is entirely untrue! What determines the freshness of a bean is the time between roasting and preparing. Most coffee beans are roasted months before being purchased, so to find fresh beans you need to find those that are roasted just after being purchased. Do this once and you will see the difference between the “fresh” beans purchased at your local store and the fresh beans roasted right before being shipped to your home.
Organic coffee beans are not necessarily for everyone, but there are many reasons to consider buying them. Everyone has to keep these benefits in mind and make their own decision. Do you think the health rewards for your body and the planet are worth the extra time it may take to order organic beans rather than purchasing stale beans at the store?
